Recent Events and Community Life at Bay Creek in August 2026

August kept the Bay Creek calendar as busy as the rest of summer, moving from ranger-led nature walks and family programming at the Life Center through a full slate of ladies’ league golf, a marquee member-guest tournament, and a run of evening social events that carried the community into September.

A new Sunday morning nature walk joined the rotation, kayak tours ran nearly every week, and the Life Center kept its daily pool games and weekend crafts on schedule alongside a month-long cycling challenge tied to hurricane season. Golf carried the heaviest calendar of the month, anchored by the three-day Legends Member-Guest Tournament, while residents gathered for cocktails, trivia, bingo, and a councilwoman’s visit to talk local politics.

Outdoor Activities and Nature Experiences

Netting on the Beach ran twice this month, August 7 and August 21, each session from 2:00 to 3:30 PM at Bay Creek Beach, giving families a hands-on look at the shoreline wildlife of the Chesapeake Bay.

The Bay Creek Kayak Experience returned four times through the month, each a guided paddle through the calm waters of Old Plantation Creek with kayaks, paddles, and life jackets supplied.

Sunday Stroll joined the calendar as a new weekly fixture, running from 7:00 to 8:00 AM at Base Camp. Led by rangers Cara and Maggie, the quiet morning walk asked participants to slow down and take in the nature preserve with all five senses before the rest of the day got underway.

The Owl Prowl returned August 14, a one-mile guided hike from Base Camp after dark in search of signs of the preserve’s more reclusive residents.

Outdoor programming closed the month with a Full Moon Campfire on August 28, gathering residents at Base Camp for conversation about the night sky and the occasional ghost story.

Wellness, Creativity, and Learning

Plein Air Paint and Wine ran twice, August 20 and 26, both mornings at Base Camp. The session included art supplies and a glass of wine.

A Lunch & Learn on August 26 brought nutritionist Michele Vita to Chesapeake Hall to talk through eating well after 50, pairing the presentation with lunch.

Daily programming at the Life Center held its rhythm: pool games ran every afternoon from 2:00 to 3:00, and kids’ crafts continued every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 1:00.

The Life Center also opened its August cycling challenge, “Ride Out the Storm,” timed to hurricane season. Riders logging 100 total miles on the Life Center’s stationary bikes by August 31, tracked ride by ride on the sign-up sheet, earned an entry into a drawing for a Life Center hat.

Golf Events and Club Play

Ladies’ League Play Day opened the month on August 4 with a 9:00 AM shotgun start, nine holes on a casual format followed by lunch off a discounted league menu.

The format repeated August 11 as Ladies’ League Clinic & Play Day, preceded by a complimentary 20-minute clinic in the simulator room.

The Sunday Member Mixer Scramble came around twice, August 16 and 30, both a 3:00 PM shotgun start over nine holes.
Ladies’ League Guest Day followed August 18, letting members bring a guest onto the course for the round without it counting against the guest’s usual limit.

The Legends Member-Guest Tournament ran August 20 through 22, a two-person round-robin of five nine-hole matches per flight, capped at 36 teams, with flight winners advancing to a shootout for the overall title. The tournament closed with a cocktail reception on the 22nd for players and spouses.

Ladies’ League Fun Tournament Day closed out the golf calendar August 25 with a four-person net scramble and randomly drawn teams.

Social Gatherings and Community Events

Trivia Night opened the month’s social calendar August 4, hosted by Eric Hack in Chesapeake Hall with prizes, food, and drinks.

Pool Movie Night Glow Party screened “Finding Nemo” on August 7, with complimentary popcorn at the Life Center pool.

Drive-In Movies brought “Grease” to Chesapeake Hall on August 8 for a Dinner and a Movie night.

Sunset Jam kept its Thursday evening slot at Bay Creek Beach, running August 13 and 27 at 6:00 PM.

Candy Bar Bingo Night filled the Life Center lounge August 19, with winners choosing from a shrinking selection of candy bars until the last one was claimed.

Friday Night Under the Oak on August 28 brought live music and light refreshments to the Tree of Life.

An adults-only Pool Party closed out the month August 29.

Community Partnerships and Initiatives

Cocktails and a Chat returned August 18 in the Coach House‘s Chesapeake Room, with Cape Charles Councilwoman Tara Ashworth hosting. This month’s guest, Councilman Paul Grossman, spoke to the town’s edge rezoning discussion at the county level and gave an update on the Eastern Shore of Virginia’s groundwater committee.

The Last Full Stretch of Summer

Between a three-day golf tournament, four kayak tours, a new Sunday morning walk, and a cycling challenge that turned hurricane season into a reason to get on a bike, August left little unclaimed on the Bay Creek calendar. The pace carries the community to the edge of fall, with the same mix of golf, water, and gathering likely to shape what September brings.
