Recent Events and Community Life at Bay Creek in July 2026

Long daylight hours put most of the programming outdoors. Residents paddled Old Plantation Creek, waded into the shallows with collection nets, painted in the preserve, and walked the woods after dark listening for owls. Golf members had a full slate of their own, with the Club Championship, the Ladies’ Invitational, and the weekly Sunday scrambles all falling inside the same four weeks. Bay Creek also hosted its fourth annual PGA HOPE Day, welcoming Veterans and Active Duty Military members from across the Mid-Atlantic.

Outdoor Activities and Nature Experiences

Ranger Stan led much of the month’s outdoor programming, starting on the morning of July 5 with Netting on the Beach. The Chesapeake Bay supports a wide range of aquatic wildlife, and this family-friendly session introduced several netting techniques and a bit of specimen collection along the shoreline.

The Bay Creek Kayak Experience was offered several times over the month. Each guided paddle covered the calm waters of Old Plantation Creek across about two hours, at a pace that suited first-time paddlers and experienced ones equally.

On July 17, the Owl Prowl took walkers on a one-mile guided hike through the Bay Creek Nature Preserve after sundown, looking for signs of the owls that live there. The preserve provides habitat for birds that are reclusive and highly specialized, and the walk doubled as a lesson in how a residential community can share ground with them.

The Bicycle Beer Flight on July 25 put a different spin on a tasting. A guide led riders through the preserve to four scenic stops, each pouring a different craft selection, before the group finished at the Coach House Tavern with a full pour of a favorite from the flight.

Nature Talk Campfires bookended the month, on July 4 and again on July 24. Both gathered people around the fire for wide-ranging conversation about the natural, cultural, and historical character of Bay Creek and the Eastern Shore, with time for questions and the occasional ghost story.

The month finished with a Plant ID Hike on July 31, a slow-paced, ranger-guided walk of about an hour and a half. Walkers picked up the names and uses of the trees, flowers, vines, ferns, and forbs along the route.

Wellness, Creativity, and Learning

Plein Air Paint and Wine took over Base Camp on the morning of July 20. The guided session set painters up outdoors in the Nature Preserve for a landscape tutorial pitched at every skill level, so people picking up a brush for the first time worked alongside those who had done it before. Art supplies and a glass of wine were included with the spot.

Daily programming at the Life Center gave families a reliable rhythm through the month. Pool games were held every afternoon from 2:00 to 3:00, and kids’ crafts ran every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 1:00.

Golf Events and Club Play

The golf calendar filled quickly in July. Ladies’ League Play Day on July 7 opened with a 9:00 AM shotgun start on one of the three nines, a casual nine holes followed by lunch and a Ladies’ League menu of discounted selections. The format repeated on July 14, this time preceded by a complimentary Ladies’ League Clinic at 8:30 AM. The clinic runs 20 minutes in the simulator room, covers a new instructional topic each month, and comes with a mimosa.

The Club Championship began Saturday, July 11. The 36-hole stroke play event sent the Men’s Regular Division out first, followed by the Men’s Senior, Men’s Super Senior, Women’s Regular, and Women’s Senior divisions, with Sunday’s order reversed. Saturday’s round was played from Palmer Front to Palmer Back, and Sunday’s from Nicklaus Front to Palmer Front. Gross and Net Champions were awarded in every division, and each Gross Division winner earned exclusive use of a Champion’s Parking Spot for the next year.

The Sunday Member Mixer Scramble came around twice, on July 19 and July 26, both with a 3:00 PM shotgun start over nine holes. The Golf Shop builds the four-person teams deliberately, splitting spouses and partners into separate foursomes and placing at least one female player on every team, which is a straightforward way to put members alongside people they have not played with. Scoring ran through the Golf Genius app with live results on the Golf Shop TV, men playing the Gold tees and women the Red. Entry on July 19 included chef’s choice tapas before play and prizes afterward.

Ladies’ League Guest Day followed on July 21 with a 9:00 AM shotgun start and lunch after play, giving league members the chance to bring a guest onto the course for the month.

The Ladies’ Invitational on July 27 filled the whole day. Play started with breakfast in the Banquet Room and ran through a two-person team net scramble on Palmer Front to Palmer Back, with both partners hitting every tee shot and the team playing on from the better of the two. Everyone competed from the Red tees. Lunch and the awards presentation closed things out in the afternoon.

Social Gatherings and Community Events

Sunset Jam was the fixture of the month. On Thursday evenings at 6:00 PM, the Sunset Jam Band set up at Bay Creek Beach and played into the sunset. The idea behind the series is fellowship more than performance, so people sang along, sat in with the band, or stretched out on a blanket and listened.

Trivia Night on July 7 gave the competitive streak somewhere else to go. Eric Hack hosted, teams played for prizes, and food and drinks kept the room going between rounds.

Poolside Movie Friday returned to the Life Center on July 17 with a screening of Moana 2, an easy summer evening for families. Later in the month, on July 28, DJ JD hosted Music Bingo at the Coach House Tavern, where naming the song mattered more than filling the card.

Community Partnerships and Initiatives

Bay Creek hosted its Fourth Annual PGA HOPE Day on Monday, July 20, welcoming Veterans, Active Duty Military members, and PGA Professionals for a day of golf and fellowship. PGA HOPE graduates traveled in from programs across Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and the wider Middle Atlantic region, joined by the PGA Professionals and volunteers who make the program work. The day gave recent graduates a chance to enjoy the course, reconnect with fellow Veterans, and spend time with the PGA Professionals who support the program.

PGA HOPE stands for Helping Our Patriots Everywhere. The program introduces golf to Veterans and Active Duty Military members as a way of supporting their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being, and the July event brought that mission onto the Bay Creek course for a fourth straight year.

On July 15, the Chesapeake Room at the Coach House hosted Cocktails and a Chat, an early evening gathering for residents and their guests. Cape Charles Councilwoman Tara Ashworth invited candidates on this fall’s town and county ballots to introduce themselves, speak to current issues in Cape Charles, and take questions from the room.

Summer at Full Stride

Between tournament golf, guided paddles, nature hikes, live music on the beach every Thursday, and a full slate of family programming at the Life Center, July was one of the busiest months on the Bay Creek calendar. And with most of that programming carrying straight into August, the second half of the summer is shaping up much like the first.
